1. Castle Vale: example of resident involvement

Castle Vale is a modern housing area on the north eastern edge of Birmingham. It is unique in many ways and has gone through distinct sets of changes. The things that most people noticed on their first visit to the area, when it was first built as a housing estate, was the flat and open landscape and the very distinct boundaries which seemed to almost cut Castle Vale off from the rest of the city to make a little island of people.

Castle Vale Community Housing Association is the main provider of Social Housing on the estate and an excursion to Castle Vale gives you a good impression of how residents can get involved at every stage of the development of the Association. It has 2,400 tenanted and 300 leasehold properties and also delivers Castle Vale’s Community Safety Strategy in partnership with the local police, Youth Offending Service, Youth Inclusion Support Panel and the Probation Service.  It run projects around health, environment, youth and has a community building,

Castle Vale is one of the Guide Neighbourhoods in England. They are successful community organisations who have tackled issues such as crime, poor housing and unemployment in their community
