“Politics in the Neighbourhood” Antwerp April 19 – 21 2007

“Politics in the Neighourhood”
will be the theme for this international workshop. In Antwerp there are lots of active citizens, who are very involved in keeping their neighbourhood’s livable.
A characteristic of the way they operate is that they are very aware of politics and sometimes even become politically involved.
This workshop is organised by R4R Europe in close cooperation with the City of Antwerp,
the Antwerp citizens and Antwerp University.

Thursday April 19

20.30 - 21.00 Introducing Antwerp
Introduction: Short history of Antwerp in figures, art and history, Antwerp’s world port and also economics, politics and society.

Friday April 20

09.o0 - 11.30 Opening: Interactive conversation about the experiences of
active citizens in relation to politics and media
12.00 - 13.30 Lunch
13.30 - 16.30 Excursions; visits to different
interesting projects from active
citizens in Antwerp

Saturday April 21

09.00 - 11.00 “Lentepoets” action
The foreign guests will be received by volunteers of the Antwerp initiative “Opsinjoren”. They organise a yearly event which is called “The Lentepoets” whereby citizens clean up their neighbourhood.
11.30 - 13.00 Antwerp residents will guide small groups of visitors and show them their neighourhoods and the various activities they organise with and for the community. The vistors help to cleaning the streets and have coffee and cake afterwards.
